Displaying the U.S. Flag:
Do’s & Don’ts

With Labor Day coming up, many residents may be thinking about displaying the American flag in honor of our nation’s workers. The U.S. flag is a powerful symbol of pride and respect, and it is important to display it properly.

Here are some display guidelines:

 Do’s

  • Always display the flag with the union (stars) at the top left.
  • Illuminate the flag if flown at night.
  • Bring the flag indoors during inclement weather unless it is made of all-weather material.

Don’ts

  • Don’t let the flag touch the ground, floor or water.
  • Don’t use the flag as clothing, bedding or drapery.
  • Don’t display the flag if it is torn, faded or in poor condition — retire it respectfully.

By following these traditions, we honor the flag and everything it represents.
